ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Our school is a public school located central in Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland. It is a primary school starting from 1st up to 7th grade (out of 10 compulsory grades) with 650 pupils, age of six to twelve. We have pupils who have different mother tongues and altogether 29 languages are spoken in our school. Overall, the staff members are around 90 people which 58 of them are teachers. Subjects taught in our school according to the Icelandic national curriculum guide for compulsory schools are: Icelandic, Icelandic as a second language, foreign languages: English, Danish, art and crafts, natural sciences, physical education, social sciences, religious studies, life skills, equal rights affairs, ethics, mathematics, information and communication technology and home economics. The main principals we follow at our school are: well-being – cooperation - ambition – creativity.

As our school has once participated in an Erasmus+ project before, we know how important and meaningful it is. CLIL and PBL is new to us and we are very interested in studying that combined with intercultural and global issues. As mentioned earlier our school is an inclusive school and we respect that children learn in varied ways. With inclusion the focus is on adjusting to the children’s individual needs to learn so they can participate in meaningful ways within school and classroom environment. We think that participating in this programme will help the pupils as well as the teachers to understand the diversity within our society and aid broaden our horizon while we are learning together, exchange views and ideas.

The key people are Gudny Rosa Sigurbjornsdottir and other staff members of 6th and 7th grade. It is highly unlikely that they will leave the school during the next years. They have been at the school for a long time and are very happy at work and proud of their school. In case it happens they would replace themselves with good people. This is a large school so there are many to choose from.

Gudny Rosa Sigurbjornsdottir has twice gone abroad on a European grant. She has worked as an assistant of English in Toulouse, France, 1995 – 1996 through the Lingva program which was presented to teachers that were about to graduate. She has also gone on a Grundtvig grant to Italy for 3 months. There she gave free English lessons in a small community in Ghilarza, Sardinia. She was also in charge of the Erasmus+ project the school has participated in and has organized visits to Melaskoli from abroad.
